Finding your tyre size
Your tyre size is printed on the sidewall of each tyre as a sequence such as 205/55 R16, followed by a load and speed rating like 91V. The first number is the width in millimetres, the second is the height of the sidewall as a percentage of that width, and the R16 is the wheel diameter in inches.
Including this in your enquiry is genuinely useful, because the same model of car can leave the factory on several different wheel sizes, and some cars run different sizes front and rear. A quick photo of the sidewall works just as well if that's easier than copying the numbers down.
When tyres need replacing
The legal minimum tread depth in the UK is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre, around its whole circumference. That's a minimum, not a target: wet-weather grip falls away noticeably before a tyre reaches that point, so many drivers choose to change them a little earlier. Most tyres have small wear indicator bars moulded into the main grooves to help you judge.
Tread isn't the only thing to look at. Sidewall bulges, deep cuts and cracking from age are all reasons to replace a tyre regardless of how much tread remains. Uneven wear across the tread usually points to something else (tyre pressures or worn suspension and steering parts) and is worth mentioning to us, because a new tyre will go the same way if the cause is left.
Choosing the right tyre
There's a wide spread of tyres available for most sizes, and the best choice depends on the car, the mileage you cover and the sort of driving you do. Tell us what matters to you (wet grip, road noise, longevity or keeping the cost sensible) and we'll suggest options to suit. It's generally best to keep matching tyres across an axle, so we'll advise if replacing a pair makes more sense than a single tyre.

Do you do wheel alignment?
No, wheel alignment isn't something we offer at this site. It's worth knowing that uneven tyre wear is often caused by worn suspension or steering parts rather than alignment alone, and that is something we can inspect and repair. If the alignment then needs setting, we'll tell you so you can have it done.
